Mental Health Awareness Week, 13-19 May 2024

Unless you’re sat under a stone, you’ll have likely seen a post or two about Mental Health Awareness Week, which happens around this time every year. Supported by the Mental Health Foundation, this years’ theme is about getting moving to promote and support mental wellbeing.

And moving is such an important part of being human. Getting outside, letting the air whoosh into your lungs, you really feel alive. The feel good endorphins are awash, released by our neurotransmitters and we can feel amazing. You know that feeling when you don’t want to go on that run / cycle ride / class / walk and yet feel amazing for having done it? That’s the one.

At the Wellbeing Folk, we ‘actively’ encourage being active! But it’s not just organised activity or exercise that can do this. What are classed as discrete exercise can also do the trick - taking a walk after a long day at the office, or even better still, creating a walking pack and nipping out at lunchtime for a 20 or 30 minute walk can be just as effective. It doesn’t need to take excessive amounts of time or money, just a simple commitment to yourself and maybe a pal or two to get out and get moving.

Mental wellbeing and resilience is a relative thing. It is nuanced and not necessarily simple - oftentimes it is anything but. With small, simple steps both literally and figuratively, that small act of investment and commitment to ourselves can go a long way to taking off the edge of life. It is by no means the only way, far from it - we know that mental and physiological health are inherently interlinked, but a bit of a movement can do wonders.

We can offer physical movement supports whether through a regular yoga session in person or online, or getting an expert in to help set up and support physical activity. Lets have a conversation and see how we can help.
